A Glimpse at Shared Reading and a Facebook FREEBIE

Shared reading is one of my most favorite parts of the day!! It is a time for me to model what great reading looks like, sounds like, and even how great readers think.  The best part is that the students get the joy of reading the on-level text with me!

When I taught Kindergarten in the past, I mainly used poems or songs for our shared reading time.  As I transitioned to 1st grade, I began using more big books than songs and poems.  The kids still would jump for joy when it was a song, but big book was their favorite literacy station by far!  This year I hope to incorporate more big books into my shared reading time with my sweet kinder friends.

I thought I would share a little bit more about shared reading today. Let’s begin with my basic “must-haves”.  These are the tools that I was first introduced to as I worked on implementing shared reading.Great tools to use for shared reading! I also love the weekly teaching guided she shares. It makes shared reading a breeze to implement!

Get the highlighter tape HERE from Lakeshore Learning.
Get the sentence strips HERE from Shoplet.

Here is a glimpse of what it looks like in our classroom. This shared reading weekly guide is a great help for getting stared with implementing shared reading!

This isn’t set in stone and it changes depending on the needs of my students.  One week we may use a big book and focus on retelling if several of them are struggling with retell during guided reading.  Another week it may be making connections or predicting. As with everything, it’s a living document and we have to be flexible. Just something to keep in mind as you plan for your little friends!
Great poem to use at the beginning of the year for kindergarten shared reading! This post also talks about implementing shared reading in your classroom.

  1. You have a typo on this free item…thought you might want to change that. You have “cute” out instead of “cut” out. 🙂 Have a good day.

  2. I love this freebie-thank you so much! I teach preschool just 2 days a week so your freebie is the perfect thing for that time frame. Do you have any others like that? Or know where i could get some? I like the simplicity for my preschoolers and we can get through it quickly then have a copy for their poem folders.

  3. Hi! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form?
I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m
having problems finding one? Thanks a lot!

  4. I too love Shared Reading and see the benefits of this great teaching method each year. I also add a student copy of the poem, song, book that students add to their book box each week. This becomes texts they can read and are especially handy for Read to Self time!!

    1. Yes! I do the same! They call them their “song and poem books” and are their FAVORITE thing to read in their book tubs. 🙂

  5. I really like your “I am me poetry freebie.” I know you have science poems on tpt. Do you have any more simple like your freebie? (The science ones look a lot more difficult) *On a different note…I have tried multiple times getting your free guided reading resource cards by signing up on your newsletter. I haven’t had any luck yet, if you could send me those it would be appreciated. Thank-you.

    1. Hi Dustin! I do not have any more simple poems, I’m sorry. You are right about the science poems–they are geared toward first graders. 🙂 When you enter your email address for the cards, you will need to confirm your email address in the email they send you. Once you click to do that, you are automatically taken to where they download. 🙂
