For many of us, February can feel like a ‘blah’ month stuck in the middle of winter break and spring break. But I’m here to tell you that you can pack a ton of fun activities for your kindergarten, first, and second grade learners with all of the holidays in February. February read alouds are great for Groundhog’s Day, President’s Day,Black History Month, Valentine’s Day. There are so many holidays to teach students about and to celebrate. One way to do this is through February read alouds! You can pack so much teaching in to your read aloud time.
Interactive read alouds are a powerful time of day! Not only do you get to know your students better through conversations, but you provide strong, explicit teaching and authentic practice. With this, students can learn necessary reading strategies and skills that help them build their comprehension skills. You are able to invite the students to interact in a meaningful way with the text along the way or after reading.
With read alouds, you are able to show students what a skilled read looks and sounds like. You can model thinking like a reader as well as what fluent, proficient reading sounds like. You can also help students build schema and expose them to a wide variety of genres.
And don’t forget, you can help develop their interest in books and a love for reading! What teacher doesn’t love this?!
When choosing books for February read alouds, I made sure to pick books that students possibly haven’t read yet. There are also so many fun themes and holidays to plan read alouds around! From Presidents’ Day to Valentine’s Day to Groundhog’s Day, there are countless opportunities to grab students’ attention!
These 6 are some of my favorite books for this month, and I hope you love them too! It was very important to me that each of the February read alouds I picked would easily lend itself to teaching a reading strategy or skill for you. I also wanted to make sure that students would have an opportunity to practice these reading strategies and skills.
