Earth Day is just around the corner! April 22 to be exact! It is the perfect time for Earth Day activities and to discuss what we can do to help save the earth and be better citizens in our communities. We talk about the importance of recycling, reducing our waste, and reusing things over and over. I always love celebrating Earth Day with my students by doing some Earth Day activities!

Earth Day Activities for Reading and Writing
I love to integrate reading and writing any way possible with our science units! The way our curriculum fell, we did this unit at the beginning of the year in Kindergarten. I like to integrate earth day read alouds, earth day writing activities, and any other literacy activities that we can.
Sentence building is so good for them–even at this time of the year, though!

Anytime we can add some fun with our shared reading, we did! I wrote a little poem and we had a phonics sort to go with it. Each day we would choral read (or sing!) it together and focus on different aspects. This was a great way to introduce the concept and topic to my students during our literacy block.

We always love making a book that students can read! The kids work to color them and assemble them and then we read them all together. The kids place them in their book boxes when they are done so that they can re-read them all the time during read-to-self time!

As we continued learning throughout the week, using graphic organizers was helpful. We used them to record our learning and brainstorm things together.

At the end of our Earth Day activities unit, we compiled everything we had learned about taking care of the earth and made earth savers as we wrote about how we could save the earth!

Earth Day Activities for Science Time
One of the main things we talked about was recycling. We did a lot of sorting and discussing items that we can recycle right in our classroom as part of our Earth Day activities! We talked about the attributes that make items recyclable and how even when we think things CAN’T be recycled, they can sometimes!

We also did a sort at the end with our pocketbook! It’s another great way to wrap up earth day activities!

Creating an anchor chart together as we learned about different ways to care for our earth was a must for our Earth Day activities. You can read more about the importance of anchor charts here.

What could be more fun than a science experiment? This is great to use at the beginning to grab their attention or at the end of the unit as a wrap up activity.
