Earth Day Writing Freebie!

When Earth Day is around the corner, we hit the ground running with some Earth Day fun! From integrating literature to writing to building things from recycled materials, we are all about talking, thinking, and exploring what it means and looks like to be a better citizen of our Earth!

We started the week by reading one of my FAVORITE books, Michael Recycle by Ellie Bethel.

We then got busy on our Earth Day writing and crayon resists.  This was my first time doing a crayon resist and I think I may be hooked! I just adore the way they turned out!

Materials Needed:

  • black construction paper
  • white construction paper
  • crayons
  • blue tempera paint, watered down
  • scissors
  • glue
  • pictures of students

Instructions:

  1. Using a white crayon, draw a circle for the earth on white construction paper. Draw and color the land portions green.
  2. Paint over the whole earth using the watered down blue tempera paint.
  3. While the earth is drying, cut out the face/head for the illustration. Glue it (or stick it if it’s a sticker) onto white paper. Draw the body on the head with the arms up in the air to hold the earth.
  4. Cut out the body from the white paper and glue onto the black paper towards the bottom, leaving room for the earth on top.
  5. Glue the earth on the black paper above the hands.
  6. Add the Earth Day writing to the right side.

This was a group think project that out team came up with the last 10 minutes of planning time on Monday! I just love it when we do things like this and they turn out great! We are all better when we work together!
