4 Summer Reading Activities to Keep Readers Growing All Summer

As elementary teachers, we know how hard our students work all year long to grow as readers. We celebrate their progress and feel proud of how far they’ve come. But then summer hits—and we’ve all seen how easily that progress can slide if students aren’t regularly engaging with engaging summer reading activities.

Here’s the good news: keeping reading going over the summer doesn’t have to be complicated, and it doesn’t require sending home a thick packet of worksheets that families won’t touch. The best summer reading activities are the ones that are simple, effective, and realistic for busy families.

Today, I’m sharing four easy summer reading activities you can send home to support your readers and their families. Each one is designed to give students meaningful practice that’s developmentally appropriate and easy to use—no stress required.

1. FREE Summer Reading Challenge

Looking for a fun, no-prep way to get kids excited about reading during the summer? The Free Summer Reading Challenge is exactly that.

This printable challenge is designed with creativity and flexibility in mind. Instead of telling students exactly what to read and when, it gives them a variety of engaging and playful ways to read at home—like reading with a flashlight, reading to a pet, or reading under a tree.

Because the format is simple and open-ended, families can easily weave it into their summer plans. Whether they’re traveling, staying home, or juggling camps and activities, this challenge gives them a low-pressure way to keep reading top of mind.

The best part? Kids love checking off the activities and seeing how many they can complete by the end of summer. It feels like a game, but you’ll know they’re getting authentic reading time in.

Use this FREE summer reading challenge to keep your students reading throughout the summer! It's perfect for your summer reading activities & to add to your summer bucket challenge for your kindergarten and first grade readers!

This free summer reading challenge is a great option to print out and send home the last week of school to share fun summer reading activities. It’s an easy win for both teachers and families!

2. Summer Reading Kit for K & 1 Readers

Many families want to help their children continue reading over the summer—but they’re not always sure how. That’s where the NEW Summer Reading Kit comes in!

Whether a child reads independently or with a parent, the kit makes reading feel purposeful as it targets decoding skills and phonics. Skills covered are: CVC, blends, digraphs, and CVCe words.

If you’re looking for a resource to send home that feels like a step up from “just read a book,” this kit is a strong choice. It provides a gentle structure that families can follow while giving students meaningful reading practice all summer long. Take a closer look HERE!

3. Reading Bingo Challenge

Another engaging way to encourage reading over the summer is with a Reading Bingo Challenge. This activity provides a bingo-style card filled with different reading tasks, such as reading a book with a blue cover, reading under a tree, or reading to a family member.

The bingo format turns reading into a game, motivating students to complete a row, column, or even the entire card. It’s a flexible tool that accommodates various reading levels and interests, making it suitable for all students.

Families can easily incorporate this into their summer reading activities, and students will enjoy the sense of accomplishment as they mark off each completed task. Our family’s favorite was choose a reward to all work towards together!

4. Decodable Passages for Targeted Phonics Practice

Some students are still working to master specific phonics skills taught during the year. One way to keep students working on targeted skills, but in a way that is quick and meaningful its to use these passages as part of your summer reading activities.

These decodable sets are organized by phonics patterns, including:

Each passage includes a word list for decoding practice, a short story that matches the target skill, a dictation sentence, and simple comprehension questions.

Everything is designed to be used with minimal support from adults—which means students can work through the pages independently or with light guidance.

All you need to do is print out the passages your students need, staple them together, and send them home in a folder. Done.

We all know how much effort goes into helping students grow as readers from August to May. Sending home thoughtful, but manageable summer reading activities helps ensure that students have a strong start to the year. These four resources give families options that are easy to use, fun for kids, and rooted in best practice!
