Teaching Children to Speak with Kindness {and a FREEBIE}

Grab this new book and FREEBIE to share as you are teaching kindness in the classroom.

You are on the other side of your classroom. “STOP!”, you hear someone yell. “Don’t do that!”, they continue. You look to see one child bothering another and while you now have a very upset child, you scramble to figure out what happened.

During these times of conflict, teaching children to speak with kindness and have meaningful conversations is one of the best tools we can give them. It truly is a lifelong skill that will be used throughout various relationships. Kindness is one of my favorite character traits to celebrate!

One of my favorite ways to lead into conversations like this both at home and in the classroom is with a book. Recently, Amanda Erwin, kindergarten teacher and author, wrote the book The Paper Heart.

It is a beautifully written story about a class of critters who are struggling with conflict. The teacher teaches them to speak from their heart and to have meaningful conversations that help lead to resolutions. Students even use a paper heart to signal that they are speaking from their heart. What a beautiful symbol!

After reading the book, students can practice role-playing various situations. This is a great way to coach them through having conversations from their heart that both fix the problem and are done with kindness.

You can use this FREE RESOURCE to have students write about how they can share their hearts in a kind, safe way. You can never have enough resources to help with teaching children to speak with kindness.
