Summer reading is so important for our students! The dreaded summer slide is real. Did you know that research suggests that kids will lose an average of one month of learning over the summer? For reading, students can drop two reading levels. Low-income students tend to decline even more. Yikes! I know that sounds like a lot, but I’ve seen this first hand in the classroom both in low-socioeconomic classrooms and middle class. I spend so much time in September reviewing and trying to reteach lost reading skills. Here is the good news – falling behind is preventable!
Most teachers know about the importance of reading all year long, but how can we help combat the summer slide if we aren’t with our students? By giving families resources! I’ve created a simple Summer Reading Challenge that you can give to your students to encourage them to read every day. It’s packed full of fun ways to read a book every single day. Don’t forget to remind parents where your local library is, too!
Because studies show that students can gain reading proficiency in the summer by practicing consistently, let’s help our little learners keep learning by reading all summer long.
