All About Apples and a Poetry FREEBIE

Fall is right around the corner.  That means pumpkin spice lattes, apples, and college football!  Usually by the third week of school, we are ready to move from back-to-school themed books to apples. My students always enjoy apple activities as I integrate it into our balanced literacy and science.

A blog post about integrating apples for k-1

Let’s take a peek!  Here are some of our favorite read alouds we would use.

For the most part, since this is toward the beginning of the year I introduce our “eagle eyes” decoding strategy poster (find those here) and we discuss how good readers use the picture to help them figure out the words. I choose simple text so that I can model, model, model and they aren’t caught up in storylines.

We also begin to focus on retelling with a beginning, middle, and end.  Here are some favorites for that.Apple Theme

By this time the little ones have caught on to the shared reading routine and get so excited when we have a new poem and/song to add to our notebooks!Apple Poem

In science, we always enjoy various apple activities!  We explore the seasons with the apple life cycle and investigate apples with our five senses! Integrating apples with reading and scienceWe always do some sort of writing either in science or during writing time. Apple Unit for k-2 Integrating apples with reading and science
